Strategies

Our programs employ a variety of strategies to help communities achieve the conditions in which people can be healthy.

Community Action Model (CAM)

With the Community Action Model, we work in collaboration with communities. The CAM provides a framework for community members to acquire the skills and resources to investigate the health of their neighborhood. Then they are able to plan, implement, and evaluate actions that aim to change the environment to promote and improve health.

Community Coalition Building

Participation in multidisciplinary coalitions has led to increased funding supporting communities, increased coordination, greater sharing of resources (both financial and otherwise), open communication, and increased trust among city and community agencies. Some of the coalitions we work with include the Tobacco Free Coalition, the Shape Up Coalition...

Population Health Assessments

A variety of health assessments are conducted by the Department of Public Health and its partners. Assessment is one of public health's core functions.

Public Health Professional Development

The Health Education Training Center provides trainings, brown bags, and forumsĀ on public health issues and community-based primary prevention. We also promote mentoring for public health students and new professionals.

Collaborations

We collaborate with other Department of Public Health programs, community health centers, other City agencies, academic programs, community groups, local businesses, and other health jurisdictions.

Social Marketing

Some of our partners plan and implement programs that strive to bring about social change using concepts from commercial marketing.

Foundation for Our Strategies

Each of the above strategies is based upon the Institute of Medicine's definition of public health and is employed within the context of well-establish public health concepts.
