Violence is a major public health problem in San Francisco, and youth are disproportionately affected by it.

YouthPOWER

YouthPOWER is a youth-driven project that has identified violence issues and resources affecting young people in the Mission and Bayview Hunters Point. A series of recommendations was developed. A multidisciplinary Citywide Oversight Committee participated throughout the assessment process, and continues in the implementation process. Insights from DCYF (a major funder of youth programs in SF), the Youth Guidance Center, the School District and others helped shape realistic recommendations. The partnership has been successful in attracting funding to carry out recommendations. Members of the Oversight Committee are currently working to create a youth development policy to be adopted by the City departments and eventually incorporated into contracts. Because the committee is jointly developing this policy, the major agencies funding youth service will have in place consistent standards and practices to support quality youth programming by both City agencies and community-based organizations.
