Population Health Assessment and Policy
Assessment of the population's health is a core public health function. Because birth and death records are the most complete measure of a City's health, we rely extensively on these. A new analysis of the leading causes of death in San Francisco and their determinants is currently underway. Meanwhile, an older preliminary analysis can be referred to.
The development of policies to assure the health of San Franciscans is another core public health function. Each of the programs in the Community Health Promotion and Prevention Branch of the Department of Public Health is designed to assist communities in changing the environment of the City in ways that will promote health.
