The Bayview
(94122) is unique among San Francisco neighborhoods in having violence
(homicide) as the leading cause of years of lost life.
The fact that
ischemic heart disease is second in this ranking should not be taken
as an indication that it is less of a problem in this neighborhood.
In fact, nearly half of the population of the Bayview is African
American, a population with the highest
rates of ischemic heart disease in the City. (Rates are good
for comparing populations. Rankings like the one above, identify
leading problems in a single population.) Violence affects everything
in the Bayview. It means that people don't feel safe walking in
the neighborhood (physical
inactivity is a major determinant of ischemic heart disease
and stroke. Physical inactivity also increases the likelihood of
overweight/obesity,
hypertension,
diabetes, and
high cholesterol--clinical conditions that also increase the risk
of ischemic heart disease and stroke).
