Health Consequences of Tobacco Smoking

The contribution of tobacco use toward the leading causes of premature mortality in San Francisco is depicted in our Attibution Matrix.

This page still needs to be written (need full inventory of tobacco-related diseases), but for the purposes of our immediate work, early summer 2003:

    • Exposure to tobacco smoke is a major determinant of asthma symptoms.
    • Smoking increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, and those with diabetes who smoke are at greatly heightened risk for vascular complicatons.
