Contribution of Alcohol to SF Burden of Disease

"Population attributable fractions" -- the amount of mortality that would have been avoided in the absence of heavy or poorly-timed drinking --are published by both the Federal Government and the State of California. For example, 47% of homicides, 40% of cirrhosis of the liver deaths, 29% of drug overdoses (poisonings), and 23% of suicides are attributable to alcohol. Alcohol attributable fractions for California are available from the CDC. Alcohol attriubutable deaths for the United States were recently reported in MMWR.

The tables below are taken from a forthcoming DPH report on alcohol-attributable mortality in San Francisco, based on premature mortality in SF during 2003-4.

A preliminary reckoning of alcohol-related burden by zip code can be seen here. A more thorough analysis is underway.
